Using two SIM cards is a great way to manage separate lines for work and personal use, or for travel. Once you've inserted both SIMs, this guide will show you how to activate them, set your preferences, and switch between them on your Samsung or other Android device.
On your Android phone:
- Open Settings, then tap Connections.
- Tap SIM card manager.
- Tap the SIM card you want to activate.
- Slide the switch to On.
- Tap Name, type in a name for the SIM card, then tap Done.
Step 1: Activate and Name Your SIM Cards
First, you need to make sure both of your SIM cards are turned on and properly named so you can easily tell them apart.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Connections > SIM manager.
- You will see both of your SIM cards listed (e.g., SIM 1 and SIM 2).
- Tap on a SIM card and slide the switch to On to activate it.
- Tap Name, give it a clear label like "Personal" or "Work," and tap Done.
- Repeat these steps for your second SIM card.
Step 2: Set Your Preferred SIM for Calls, Messages, and Data
After activating both cards, you can choose which one to use by default for different actions. This prevents you from having to choose every single time.
In the same SIM menu, look for the "Preferred SIM cards" section.
- Calls: Tap to choose which SIM you want to use for outgoing calls by default. You can also select "Ask always," which will prompt you to choose a SIM every time you make a call.
- Messages: Select the SIM you want to use for sending text messages.
- Mobile Data: Choose which SIM card your phone should use for cellular data. Only one SIM can be used for mobile data at a time.
Step 3: How to Switch SIMs for a Specific Call or Text
Even with your preferences set, you can easily make a one-time switch for a specific call or message.
- Open your Phone or Messages app.
- Dial a number or select a contact.
- Before you press the call or send button, look for an icon that shows which SIM is about to be used (it will often be labeled with the name you set, like "Personal").
- Tap this icon to instantly switch to your other SIM for just that one action.
Note: While these instructions are based on the android device, the steps are very similar for most dual SIM Android phones. Menu names may vary slightly.
