TL;DR: If iMessage doesn't activate after transferring your number to Cape, wait up to 30 minutes, then work through the steps below — restarting activation, verifying your number, removing old numbers, resetting network settings, and removing physical SIMs. If none of these work, contact Apple Support.
Troubleshooting iMessage Activation

iMessage usually activates quickly after transferring your number to Cape. If it does not, the steps below will resolve most activation issues.
Steps to Fix Activation Issues
1. Wait for Activation to Complete
iMessage activation can take up to 30 minutes after adding your number. Check back periodically before trying other steps.
2. Cancel and Restart iMessage Activation
- Go to Settings → Messages → Send & Receive.
On iOS 18+: Settings → Apps → Messages → Send & Receive - If you see a spinning gear next to your phone number, tap it to cancel the current activation attempt.
- Turn off iMessage
- Restart your phone
- Turn on iMessage
- Tap your phone number again to restart activation.
3. Verify Your Phone Number in Settings
- Go to Settings → Phone → My Number.
On iOS 18+: Settings → Apps → Phone → My Number - Confirm the number matches the number shown in your Cape app.
- If the My Number field is blank:
- Enter your number starting with +1 (e.g., +11234567890).
- Tap Save, then tap the back arrow.
- Restart your phone.
- If you can't edit the number, turn the eSIM off, restart your phone, then turn it back on.
4. Remove Old Numbers from iMessage
- Go to Settings → Messages → Send & Receive.
On iOS 18+: Settings → Apps → Messages → Send & Receive - Under You Can Be Reached At, uncheck any old numbers still listed.
- Confirm your Cape number is the only number selected.
5. Reset Network Settings
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
- Important: This will erase all saved Wi-Fi passwords. Make sure you have them available before proceeding.
6. Restart Your iPhone
- Power off your device, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
- After restarting, check Settings → Messages → Send & Receive to confirm your number is listed correctly.
7. Remove Physical SIM Cards
If your device has a physical SIM slot and an old, unused SIM is inserted, remove it. Restart the device, then toggle iMessage OFF and back ON to restart activation.

If the issue continues after completing all steps above, it may require Apple's involvement. Visit Apple Support or contact Apple directly for further assistance.
