Why Was My Payment Declined?
Having trouble completing a payment or finishing signup? Most declined payments come down to a handful of common causes. This guide walks through what to check.
Quick checklist
Before anything else, run through these:
- Double-check your card number, expiration date, security code (CVC), and billing ZIP code.
- Confirm your card has funds available and hasn't expired.
- If you use a VPN or privacy tool, try temporarily turning it off (see below).
- Make sure you're using a payment card issued in the United States.
Common reasons for a declined payment
1. You're using a VPN or privacy tool
Cape is a privacy-first carrier, and we know many of our members run a VPN or privacy tool by default. To protect Cape from payment fraud, though, transactions that arrive through an anonymizing network are sometimes declined, most often on a first payment or a new signup.
If your payment won't go through and you use a VPN or proxy:
- Temporarily disable your VPN or privacy tool.
- Retry your payment.
- Turn your VPN back on once the payment completes — you're all set.
2. Your card was issued outside the United States
Cape is a U.S. mobile carrier, and signing up generally requires a U.S.-issued payment method. If your card was issued by a bank outside the U.S., it may not be accepted. If you're a U.S. resident, be sure you're using a card from your U.S. bank.
3. Your card details don't match
A small typo in the card number, expiration date, CVC, or billing ZIP code will cause a decline. Re-enter your details carefully and make sure the billing ZIP matches the one on file with your bank.
4. Your bank declined the charge
Sometimes the decline comes from your card issuer rather than from Cape. Banks may block a charge because of insufficient funds, a temporary security hold, a locked card, or their own fraud protection. If you've ruled out the causes above, contact your bank or card issuer .
5. Your card type isn't supported
Although we do support the use of prepaid cards, some prepaid, virtual, or gift cards can't be used for a recurring subscription. If you're using one of these, try a standard debit or credit card instead.
Still not working?
If you've worked through the steps above and your payment is still declined, reach out to our support team. To help us resolve it faster, let us know:
- The type of card you're using (credit, debit, prepaid) and the issuing bank's country.
- Whether you were connected to a VPN or privacy tool at the time.
- Any error message you saw on screen.
